Bonus: Why Web of Science?
With so many databases, why do I use Web of Science?
- Versus Google Scholar
Google scholar is the go-to tool to find articles when in a pinch. I still use it a lot, but not for doing focused searches on topics. Here's why:
Google scholar has character limits in their search bars (even advanced searches). I can filter by journal, but only a small subset that I can specify in limited characters.
Google scholar does not save searches for later, meaning I have to retype in my syntax every time.
Google scholar hyperinflates citations.
2. Versus Other database programs
Good coverage. I ran a test of total articles listed under each journal in Scopus, Web of Science, and Psych Info and found that WOS had the most hits for most journals. (see table 1)
Tools available. WOS is connected to Pure Elsevier, which can get you granular data on authors. You can also easily perform author or article-based searches and visualize trends over time.
